邯鄲學步(한단학보)

연(燕)나라 수릉(壽陵)에 사는 젊은이 한 사람이 조(趙)나라 서울 한단(邯鄲)으로 여행을 갔다. 그는 한단의 모든 것이 너무나 아름답고 좋아 보였다. 깨끗한 거리, 아름다운 건축, 번화한 시장, 새롭게 유행하는 의상 등은 그 사람으로 하여금 한단의 모든 것을 좋아하게 되었다.

그러나 그 연나라 사람이 가장 애착을 갖게 된 것은 한단 사람들의 걷는 모습이었다. 그는 매일 길가에 서서 행인들의 걷는 모습을 감상했다. 힘차고 멋있는 젊은 청년들과 가벼우면서 대범한 아름다운 아가씨들의 걸음걸이를 그는 마음속으로 너무 부러워하였다. 그는 아무리 생각해도 자신이 걷는 모습은 정말로 마음에 안 들었다. 그는 그는 마음속으로 결심했다.

“ 내가 만약 내가 한단사람들의 걷는 모습을 배워서 우리 연나라로 돌아가면 고향 사람들이 나를 부러워하고 칭찬을 하겠지! ”

그래서 그는 매일 몰래 한단 사람들의 뒤를 쫒아 다니면서 걸음걸이를 배웠다. 어떻게 다리를 드는지 어떻게 걸음을 걷는지, 어떻게 앞으로 나아가는 지, 돌아설 때는 어떻게 하는지 등, 한단 사람들의 걸음걸이를 배우기 위해 얼마나 많이 넘어졌는지 모르지만 그는 한마디의 불평도 없었다.

연나라 사람은 그렇게 힘든 일을 마다하지 않고 몇 개 월 동안 배웠으나 여전히 한단 사람들의 걸음걸이는 배우지 못하였고 거기다 걸을 때의 자세도 점점 더 나빠졌다. 그는 마음에 상처를 받았고 다시는 배우지 않겠다고 결심했다. 그러나 그때는 이미 원래의 자기의 걸음걸이조차도 완전히 잃어 버려 어떻게 가야 되는지 몰랐다. 그래서 그는 처참하게 기어서 연나라로 돌아 갈수 밖에 없었다.

' 한단에서 걸음걸이를 배운다. '는 성어는 한 때 남을 모방할 줄만 알고 남에 장점을 배우지도 못하고 역으로 자기가 원래 가지고 있던 물건을 전부 잃어버리는 것을 비유하는 내용이다.

During the Warring States period, people living in the city of Handan in the state of Zhao used to walk in a beautiful way. All foreigners wanted to learn how to walk like that.

North of Zhao, in the state of Yan a young man in Shouling happened to hear the news and from his remote home town went to Handan to study the posture of the people living there.

Once arrived in Handan, he went to a major street to discover that the people there actually walked in a way that was different from his own and, moreover, better-looking. He excitedly settled his mind on learning this way of walking.

At that time, a young man strolled along, and our guy began to follow him studying his movements. The young man moved a step with the left leg, and he also lifted his left foot; the young man moved a step with the right leg, he also lifted his right leg. But while paying attention to the leg, he forgot the arm, and while looking at the legs, he forgot the torso. He also followed an old man, and a young lady, but at the end he didn’t learn the way of walking of that people; on the contrary, he also forgot his own way of walking. When it was time to go back to ShouLing he could only crawl miserably.

From then on, people referred to this story to indicate an obtuse way of copying someone else to the point of forgetting onès own abilities.
